Pigment Correction
Repeated sun exposure and aging can cause melanin producing cells within the skin to lose their ability to evenly distribute pigment. This can result in dark blotches and spots to appear on your skin. Uneven tanning, dark skin spots, blotches, and freckles are all examples of uneven pigmentation. This usually occurs on areas most exposed to sun, such as neck, hands, face, arms, and décolletage.
Dr. Q Medical Spa, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q), provides laser skin care treatments to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and surrounding locations.
How Does Laser Pigmentation Removal Work?
Laser pigmentation removal is recommended for lighter skin types to reduce the appearance of spots and blotches. A laser device makes use of a specific energy wavelength to safely target dark pigmentation without affecting normal, light colored skin. Intense bursts of light are fired by the laser to target pigment lesions.
Light bursts are converted to heat to destroy all damaged cells. Pigmentation cells turn darker over the next few days to eventually fall off. Laser beams also stimulate collagen production to enhance growth of new skin. This newer skin is clearer, smoother, and more rejuvenated.
Post Treatment Expectations
Your skin may feel slightly hot and may attain a reddish hue directly after the treatment. The sensation is similar to mild sunburn. Some patients experience mild swelling as well, which can last for up to 12 hours. The discomfort can be lessened with cold ice compress.
Flat scabbing or micro crusting may appear as dark skin spots over the next 24 hours after treatment. This is the first indication of healing and will continue for the next 10 – 14 days. Once the scab naturally sloughs off, it will reveal clearer and lighter complexion. Foundation can easily mask the darkened spots. You should be able to resume normal activities after 24 hours.
Treatment Appointments Required
Laser pigmentation med spa treatment requires about 6 – 8 appointments every month for optimal results. This is similar to the sessions required in dermal roller treatments. Your treatment provider may recommend weekly microdermabrasion or chemical peels as maintenance treatment options. They can take care of any pigmentation or dark spots that reappear due to sun exposure and aging.
Side Effects or Risks to Laser Pigmentation Removal
Certain medications, such as Roaccutane and Retin A can cause photosensitivity. These medications can affect laser therapy and cause contraindicative results. It is recommended that you inform the treatment provider about any medications you are taking. This is paramount to ensure best treatment results.
Post Treatment Care
It is vital that you avoid sun exposure for at least a few days after laser pigmentation removal. This will help reduce reappearance of dark or light spots. Even though, dark spots and blotches are superficial, it can take months to make them fully disappear.
Leading medical spa experts recommend wearing SPF 30+ or higher after getting laser treatments. Dr. Q Med Spa receives patients from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and nearby areas for advanced laser skin enhancement treatments.
