Varicose Vein Treatment
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, and painful veins that fill up with blood. They tend to develop in the thighs and calves and are raised above skin surface. These are not life-threatening but can easily become uncomfortable.
Traditionally, vein stripping used to be performed for removing varicose veins. The procedure involves making tiny incisions and pulling out the veins physically out of the body. There are better technologies now that are minimally or completely noninvasive in nature for removing varicose veins.
Dr. Q Medical Spa, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides varicose vein treatments to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Beverly Hills, CA, and surrounding locations.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is useful in the destruction of varicose veins. It involves injecting the vein with sclerosant, a type of solution. The sclerosant causes the vein to collapse on itself forcing blood to find other routes through healthier veins. The veins eventually get destroyed by the body and disappear over time.
Sclerosant or sodium tetradecyl sulfate solution can only be used for treating small varicose veins that are located close to the skin’s surface. These veins are also called spider veins and help in improving the appearance of the leg.
In foam sclerotherapy, the solution is turned into foam before being injected into the vein. This process is useful for larger veins since it covers larger surface area as compared to liquid.
Radiofrequency Ablation
Radio waves or radiofrequency energy are transmitted within the vein wall in this procedure. The doctor will numb the vein and use an ultrasound for peeking inside the leg. They will pass a wire catheter to apply radiofrequency energy along the wall. Typically, the catheter runs from the knee to the groin area.
The vein will thicken and contract after heating up. They will eventually get absorbed by the body and disappear. It may take up to a few weeks to see full results.
Endovenous Laser Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation and laser ablation are similar except the procedure makes use of laser energy instead of radiofrequency. A laser fiber will be inserted within the catheter and moved to the necessary location. Laser energy causes blood vessels to close because of the heat.
The vein will eventually shrink in size and get reabsorbed by the body over time. Laser therapy and radiofrequency are usually used for treating deeper veins in the leg at a qualified med spa.
What to Expect?
Noninvasive varicose vein treatment will usually be performed using local anesthetic in a doctor’s office. You should tell the doctor if you are pregnant or have any allergies. You should also let the doctor know about all medications you are on. Ultrasound will be used by the doctor to looking inside the vein.
Numbing agent will be used on the vein. You may feel a minor stinging sensation or pressure where the catheter is inserted. During laser treatment, you would be required to wear protective glasses. The process is not usually painful.
