How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last? One of the most effective and reliable techniques to eliminate unwanted hair from any part of the body is laser hair removal. Although a number of traditional hair removal techniques are available, but they typically create only short term results. Laser hair removal, on the other hand, creates aesthetically superior and longer lasting results.

At the time of initial consultation, the treatment provider will educate the patient about various aspects of laser hair removal procedure, including the estimated longevity of its results.

The remarkable and salient Dr. Q’s medical spa, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides laser hair removal to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and other cities and suburbs in The Golden State.

Permanent Hair Removal

While ‘permanent’ may not be an accurate description in case of laser hair removal treatment, the most sustainable hair removal outcomes can still be achieved only with lasers. Therefore, it is commonly recognized as ‘permanent’ hair removal.

The procedure of laser hair removal involves the use of focused beams of light energy that eliminate the hair follicles underneath the skin. As a result, the targeted hair gets removed from the deep roots.

But different hairs in an area are likely to be in different stages of their growth cycle. This means that some of the hair will not be damaged by the laser treatment and will continue to grow. As a result, most patients will need multiple laser treatment sessions to eliminate individual hairs during their growth cycles. Some hair may even then eventually grow back.

A patient can overall expect a significant reduction in the appearance of unwanted hair after six to eight treatment sessions. Thereafter, any minor hair re-growth can be managed with touch-up treatments every six months to a year. The treatments with laser can be performed in-office, and do not involve any serious discomfort or downtime.

Studies cited by the Mayo Clinic indicate that a good candidate for laser hair removal may achieve 20 to 90 percent reduction in hair counts over the course of treatment. Leading researchers call laser hair removal as a method of permanent hair reduction, and not a method of permanent hair removal.

Factors Affecting Longevity of Results

A patient’s specific skin and hair type will influence their longevity of laser hair removal results. The procedure is most effective when the laser beams can focus on a difference in pigment, such as dark hair erupting from light skin. The pigment absorbs the concentrated light, which means that people with light colored hair will not achieve the best results with laser.

The natural structure of an individual’s hair and natural growth rates of their hair will also impact on how long the results of laser hair removal may last. The length of time that a patient can maintain the treatment results will also vary. In some cases, the patient may require more than average number of treatment sessions, or the unwanted hair may only be treatable with a specific type of laser technology.
