Laser techniques can effectively treat various types of lesions and skin conditions, including birthmarks, which are skin aberrations present at birth. The medical care provider will determine if laser treatment is suitable for the removal of a specific skin lesion.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides safe and proven skin rejuvenation procedures to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and surrounding locations.
Port-Wine Stains
A port-wine stain refers to a birthmark caused by blood vessels, which cause red, purple, or pink skin discoloration. The mark may become darker as the child grows. These birthmarks can appear on any area of the body and can differ in size. They can be linked to a neurological condition.
CO2RE laser skin resurfacing can effectively eliminate port-wine stains. Adults may undergo this procedure with only local anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and return home on the day of the procedure itself. Children or adults with substantial port-wine stains may receive treatment under general anesthesia and may require multiple treatments.
Hemangiomas
Hemangiomas are a commonly occurring type of birthmark, which is caused by an abnormal buildup of blood vessels. Hemangiomas may differ in appearance, ranging from red elevated patches to deeper purple areas.
Hemangiomas typically appear within the initial month of a child’s life and grow rapidly for the first year. They may start to disappear by the time the child is five years of age. Nearly 50 percent of all hemangiomas become smaller by themselves by the age of five. Hemangiomas may be in the uppermost skin or deeper in the skin.
Innovative treatment with CO2RE lasers may be used to address substantial or growing hemangiomas. These treatments are also effective for hemangiomas that are causing issues due to their location. Multiple treatment sessions with a laser may be necessary to accomplish desired outcomes.
Café au Lait Spots
Café au lait spots refer to tan-colored lesions that may appear in any area of the body. The size of the lesions varies. Some can be quite substantial, and cosmetic laser removal may be required. It is common for these spots to return. For this reason, patients should be prepared to undergo CO2RE laser skin resurfacing treatments as instructed by their doctor.
Telangiectasias
These are tiny blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. They may be purple, red, or blue. They usually appear on the face, neck, and upper chest. Related vessels, known as spider veins, can be found in the legs. The removal of telangiectasias is typically undertaken for aesthetic reasons.
Telangiectasias develop due to a variety of reasons, including sun damage, genetics, hot and spicy foods, hormones, emotions, certain drugs, and rosacea. A laser may be used to treat these lesions. The laser beams deliver heat energy into the targeted areas to shrink the lesions.
New vessels may continue to develop over a lifetime. CO2RE lasers may be the most effective technology to treat facial lesions. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt receives patients from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and nearby areas for advanced and effective skin rejuvenation procedures.
