Dermabrasion Skin Resurfacing Recovery

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion Skin Resurfacing Recovery Dermabrasion is an advanced skin resurfacing procedure in which the outer skin layers are gently removed to get rid of scars and wrinkles. Unlike deep chemical peels which are more intense and require several weeks for recovery, dermabrasion is a simpler procedure with relatively few side effects. People of any age can undergo this procedure.

Dr. Q Medical Spa, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides dermabrasion to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Beverly Hills, CA, and surrounding communities.

What happens after dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is generally performed in your surgeon’s office or med spa. Immediately after the procedure, your skin will feel sensitive and irritated and appear red and inflamed. The surgeon will apply an ointment on the treated area and cover it with a bandage.

You may experience a little pain, but this is easily controlled using pain medication that your doctor prescribes. You can go home soon after the procedure and dressing. It is best to have someone drive you home because the sedative used during the treatment can make you drowsy.

What precautions are necessary during recovery?

Make arrangements to take off from work and other commitments for at least the first week after surgery. As you recover, your energy levels will rise and you can slowly get back to your regular routine activities.

You may find it difficult to speak and eat for the first few days after dermabrasion. Your skin begins to heal after one week to 10 days of the treatment. It may take about three months for the skin to lose its pink hue and regain its normal tone.

You are likely to experience an itching sensation when the skin is healing. If a crusty scab forms over the area, do not pick at it or scratch it; it will fall away on its own as the healing completes.

Tiny whiteheads or acne spots may appear during the healing, but they generally fade away in a few days. If you develop cold sores, report to your doctor for advice on how to deal with it.

Experienced med spa treatment providers will generally prescribe an ointment to keep the treated area moist and a steroid cream to ease the swelling. Apply these gently to the skin as per the doctor’s instructions.

General Tips for Faster Recovery

Allowing the skin to heal naturally gives the best result. Follow these tips to ensure faster recovery:

  • Clean the treated area daily as per the doctor’s instructions.
  • Use the ointment or cream as prescribed to keep the area moist.
  • Do not swim in a pool for the first four weeks because the chlorinated water can irritate the skin.
  • Avoid active sports for at least four to six weeks.
  • Do not expose the skin to sunlight until it has healed completely. Once the peeling stops, wear sunscreen to protect the area.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol till at least four weeks to prevent skin flushing.

Dermabrasion gives long-term results, especially for fine lines, minor scars and wrinkles and you may not require any other treatment. Dr. Q Medical Spa receives patients from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Beverly Hills, CA, and nearby areas for dermabrasion procedure.
